DUBLIN, Ireland - Irish Department of Social Protection announced that 1.4 million social welfare recipients would receive their Christmas bonus in the second week of December.
Carers, pensioners, lone parents, individuals with disabilities, and those on long-term government welfare will all receive an additional 100% payout.
The qualifying time has been lowered from 15 to 12 months for those receiving an eligible Jobseekers allowance.
The incentive is available to those who have received the Pandemic Unemployment Payment for a year or more.
The payouts will cost more than €313 million in total.
"As a former Minister for Business, I know that our retail community is still feeling the impact of Covid-19," the minister for social protection, Ms. Humphreys, said.
"These past two years have been so difficult for our small and medium businesses. I am therefore urging everyone to consider spending the Christmas Bonus locally this year."
"If we keep our business in our towns, we will keep our towns in business." The minister said.
The 496,190 persons on the contributing state pensions will be the largest group of recipients.
