DUBLIN, Ireland President Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to Dervla Murphy, a travel writer who died at 90.

Ms. Murphy was a prolific author who wrote more than 25 books.

The President said that her death had saddened people all over Ireland, including her hometown of Lismore and far beyond the many places she visited.

"Her contribution to writing, particularly travel writing, had a singular commitment to the value of human experience in all its diversity."

President Higgins stated that from her 1965 book 'Full Tilt: Ireland to India on a Bicycle,' which detailed her bicycle journey through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, to her many works detailing her experiences in vastly different locations, she was always an "ethical visitor," bringing a "vital social conscience and respect for those she wrote about."
