Communities Minister 'tees' off at The Open

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has met with spectators and golfers at the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The Minister said; "This is an exciting time for Northern Ireland when the sporting world is focused on Portrush. I am looking forward to Royal Portrush Golf Club welcoming players and fans from across the world..
As Minister, I fully recognise the value of sport-including golf-and the vital role it plays in encouraging people of all ages to stay active. Sport and physical activity contribute to healthier, longer lives and foster community connections.
"Back in March I helped launch the Road to the Open initiative, which saw the R&A and Golf Ireland deliver golf taster sessions at 75 primary schools along with a six-week 'Unleash Your Drive' initiative at a further 20 primary schools. I believe that work will deliver a lasting legacy that continues well beyond the final putt.
"I hope that the legacy of both the Open itself, and these programmes, inspire more interest in golf as a sport. I trust it will encourage our future superstars to follow in the footsteps of our golfing greats..
